Escaping an abusive relationship isn't the end of the story.
For many women, it's where a different battle begins.
The bruises may heal. But fear can remain long after the wounds have faded.
Shame can linger. And the quiet voice that asks whether you were somehow to blame can be the hardest thing to silence.
In Madness in Memphis, American-born counsellor, domestic violence survivor and author Patricia Gordon Stevens explores that hidden psychological journey through the story of Morgan Sage, a woman rebuilding her life after coercive control.
‘Knocking. Hard knocks on the front door and Morgan's heart landed in her throat. Loud noises did that to her. She couldn't shake it. When someone dropped something or turned the radio or television up suddenly, she jumped. Her mind was on high alert. Her nerves were on end.’ Madness in Memphis
More than a novel about domestic violence, it is a story about learning to trust yourself again—and discovering that the worst thing that ever happens to you does not have to define the rest of your life.
After surviving an abusive marriage herself, Patricia was determined to understand why people do the things they do. That search for answers led her to study Psychological Science and Sociology before completing a Master of Counselling. Today, through her counselling practice, Maxwell House Counselling, she helps others navigate trauma, grief and recovery with the insight of someone who has walked that path herself.
While Madness in Memphis is fiction, the emotional truth behind it is unmistakable.
Patricia captures the psychological reality of coercive control in one heartbreaking reflection from Morgan:

Everyone’s talking about perimenopause, but what if we’re starting the conversation twenty years too late?

Every day, women in their forties and fifties search for answers to hot flushes, brain fog, anxiety, sleepless nights and hormonal upheaval.

But holistic women's health practitioner Robyn Llewellyn believes they're asking the wrong question.

Those symptoms often don't begin in perimenopause.

They begin decades earlier.

Long before the hot flushes.

Long before the hormone tests.

Long before most women are taught to listen to what their bodies are trying to tell them.

After almost two decades working in corporate health and beauty, including as the marketing director for a leading period care company, Robyn thought she understood women's health.

She knew the products, the research and the market. She had a successful career, a loving partner, three children and, from the outside, a life many women would envy.

Yet behind the smile, she was exhausted.

She was pushing through crushing fatigue, brain fog, heavy periods and the growing sense that her body was trying to tell her something she couldn't yet hear.

Then one day it simply said, ‘No more.’

Walking away from corporate life, Robyn began to study holistic kinesiology, Traditional Chinese Medicine and nervous system regulation.

What she discovered would transform both her own health and the way she believes women should understand their bodies.

Robyn realised she'd spent years helping women manage their health and periods without ever being taught what the menstrual cycle was really trying to communicate.

‘A woman's menstrual cycle isn't simply about reproduction. It's a monthly report card on her overall health.

We have a conversation with Robyn Llewellyn about her new book that helps you with understanding your body and perimenopause with Flow Well Be Well.
